I have compiled this
Spanish sampler exclusively for Migrant Head Start
teams, by special request, and with full knowledge
that some of the songs are sprinkled with English
words. There are also some new songs that have yet
to be released on any CD. I hope you and the
children enjoy this compilation, and I welcome
your comments and suggestions. If you see me when I
keynote or present a workshop, please stop by and
say hello.

1. Circle Time
Gather the children
and welcome them to circle time. Establishing a
routine with familiar songs for young children can
help them overcome separation anxiety, and helps
them feel like they belong. The song encourages them
to each establish their own special space to move
freely.

2. Shake, Mix,
Pound, Roll CD: “Smart & Tasty 1”
A fine motor recipe
for the hands that introduces rhythm, tests the
memory, demonstrates sequencing, and enhances
listening skills. Children start with the
repetitious moves of shake, mix, pound, and roll, as
if they are following a recipe. The moves speed up
and condense as the song progresses. Let kids make
up their own chant using (4) one-syllable words for
an any activity or action that is in sequential
order.

3. Farmer’s
Market
CD: “Smart & Tasty 1”
(Spanish/English) An
upbeat gross motor song about the variety of fresh
produce in the farmer’s market. Lay out poly spots,
construction paper, fake food, foam sheets, post
pictures/cut-outs around the room, or just pretend.
While visiting an imaginary market, kids
locomotor from one stand or station to the next:
walk to the broccoli, gallop to the
tangerines, cross one foot over the other to
the strawberries, jump to the artichokes,
wiggle to the blueberries, skip to the
cauliflower, rock to the pineapples. Let kids
come up with there own healthy produce and make up
their own moves.

4. Down, Down
Baby CD: “Smart & Tasty 1”
(Spanish/English)
Inspired by a popular playground chant, this fun
clapping, dancing or jump rope chant brings more
silliness to children with a hidden message to stay
away from sugary foods. Children can clap alone, or
hand jive with a partner. They are challenged to
move as directed: down, up, tick-tock rock their
feet or upper body (side-to-side or front-to back),
shake a leg, jump front, jump back, and jump off to
the side - all while continuously clapping to the
rhythm.

5. Take That
Rope (Action) CD: “Smart Moves 1”
(Spanish/English) A
rope activity that encourages imaginative play
promotes team work. Individuals can use a short
string, yarn, or jump rope; large groups can use a
laundry rope, thick yarn, or elastic band for this
exercise. Group size is determined by the length of
the rope. Review how the entire body moves while
completing the following actions, and move to the
rhythm of the song: Take that rope and row a
boat using opposite arms or both arms together as if
the rope is an oar, pull the rope in a
tug-a-war motion or over one shoulder, raise
the rope high up above the head in a pumping motion
or alternate raising with one hand and then the
other, ride the rope like you are holding the
reigns of a horse or like the rope is a horse while
straddling the rope, yank the rope to tighten
it into one solid line, shake the rope loose
(along with the entire body), wrap the rope
around your hand, waist, agroup of kids at waist, a
block, a chair, or other pre-assigned item. Remember
to introduce different directions such as high, low,
behind (the head or back), between (the legs),
above, below, under (one knee or arm), and so forth,
for each of the moves that are introduced. Let the
kids come up with unique ways to partner up and do
the moves.
Rema la cuerda,

Como un bote, rema rededor
Row that rope when I say , “GO!”
Rema, rema, rema, ROW!

6. Build a
Bridge (for Tots) CD: “Smart Moves 1”
Hand or interactive
body activity that introduces building
of structures: bridge-tunnel-road,
cave-tower-wall
using the melody to “If You’re Happy and
You Know It.”
a. Children build
the structures using just
their hands (Diagram A) and/or arms.
b. Children team
up, join hands and build the
structures with their bodies (Diagram B).
Allow children to
build their own bridge, cave, wall, etc. out of one
or a variety of materials such as scarves, blocks,
connecting toys,
Legos, boxes, a sheet, or table cloth that can be
turned into an obstacle course.

7. Dance Freeze
CD: “Smart Moves 2”
(English) The
introduction of this song is sung in English, but
there are no more lyrics throughout the song, so the
song can be quickly introduced in Spanish. It is a
classic up-tempo gross motor free dance song that
enhances listening skills. Kids dance and freeze
when the music stops. Feel free to assign locomotor
moves that the children complete throughout the
song: walk, run, jump, hop, skip, gallop, leap,
slide, tip toe and march. As an
alternative, call out a change in the direction of
the movement during the freeze section, when it is
quiet. Guide the children around a prop, or have the
children complete the activity in the form of a line
or shape.
Dance when you hear
music
And when it stops you freeze
Start dancing when it starts again
Dance freeze, dance freeze, dance freeze
8. To Market, To
Market
A classic up-tempo
gross motor activity. We are off to the market to
make some purchases. We walk back home to the
barn, we dance a jig after buying a pig, we
flap around the pen after buying a hen, and
we bounce around after buying hog.

9. Jell-O Jiggles
Independent children can flip-flop hands like
pancakes, or clap with a partner, then wiggle their
Jell-O hands or fingers on different parts of the
body: arm, nose, tummy, toes, head, cheek, neck,
feet, shoulders, knees, elbow, and seat. Use a piece
of yarn or string, or a scarf, to wiggle on
different body parts. Jell-O jiggles in the silliest
places. Where else can Jell-O jiggle? Now is a good
time to introduce new vocabulary words.

10. Shake Your
Boom Boom CD: “Smart Moves 3”
A “boom boom” is
whatever children want it to be; the entire body, a
body part, a homemade instrument, or even a
child-safe prop, such as a scarf. Let the kids
decide and then practice shaking their “boom booms”
before playing the song. Then children move as
directed and obey the commands: step, up, down,
push, pull, in, out, bend, rise, side-to-side, step
back, around and around.
Discuss various sounds, rhythms, and even opposites.

11. There’s a Froggie!
A lot happens in the
ecosystem of a pond. Children can talk about and mimic
the activity that they observe. There is a froggie
jumping, a bee flying, a duck floating,
a fish swimming, and a sun rising.
Introduce different preposition and practice using them
as you move the body, or toss things, as directed: into,
near, by, on, through, over, above, below, between, and
so forth.

12. Toss & Catch
CD: “Smart Moves 3”
Children can improve
fine motor and tracking skills using child-safe props
such as a scarf (tissue or large paper napkin), yarn
ball, sponge ball, balloon, or beach ball. This song
leads children through tossing and catching (or
tossing and batting with their hand upward, or tossing
and batting with their hand toward a goal). They can use
their dominant or non-dominant hand to toss a scarf that
lands on various body parts (hand, arm, back, feet,
hair, knee, etc.). Then increase the level of difficulty
by instructing them to toss-clap-catch, or
toss-spin-catch, toss-jump-catch, or toss-count-catch.
Instruct them to come up with their own creative ways to
toss and catch.
Lanzamos,
lanzamos al aire
Lanza y
atrapa, lanza y atrapa
Lanzo y

Lanzamos,
lanzamos al aire
Lanza y

Al lanzar,

13. Swing and Fly
Spread those arms and fly gracefully around the room
like a soaring bird, flying high, gliding low, dipping
those wings left, then right, turning around, etc.
Tired of flying? Kids can simply swing their arms
forward and back, left to right in a big arc… in a small
arc, above their heads, in a complete circle, arced like
a rainbow above, down between their legs, and in other
creative ways. Let them come up with their own ways to
move. Can they swing a leg? How about a finger or hand?

14. I’m Growing
CD “Smart & Yummy 1”
Children can imitate
the lifecycle of a tree in this relaxing activity,
designed to bring the heart rate down and calm children
down. Either standing or sitting, ball up like a
tight seed and grow slowly. Reach and spread
arms wide like branches, spread hands like
leaves, sway and blow in the breeze. Take slow
deep breaths. Oops, no water or sunlight. Now
wilt and droop slowly back into a tight ball.
Remember to take deep relaxing breaths. To practice
balancing, children can act this out while standing, and
attempt to balance on one leg with the one foot flat
against the knee in a yoga tree pose before
wilting.

15. Time to Go
When it’s time to go,
we can think back on the wonderful time that we had with
our friends. We can clap together, and combine clapping
with a simple sways front and back, or side to side. If
standing, we can add steps or small jumps.
