ACTIVITY

Chalk Shadows: Take students outside on a sunny day. Each student can be assigned a partner that will trace their shadow on the sidewalk in chalk. Do the activity in the morning, at noon, and later in the day. Students can trace their shadows and stand in the same place each time!  Compare the shadows and discover that they are different lengths, and go in different directions at different times of the day. This exercise can be repeated throughout the week. When their shadows are straight up, it is lunchtime - or when their shadows appear to be following them it is almost time to go home! Do they think there a shadow at bedtime?
