"5 Senses" and "Up and Down Our Bodies"

Review the 5 senses. As an example, point to the part of the body that we use for these senses. Have the children point to the part of their body that is the answer. Toward the end of the song, children are given an opportunity to name things that they can see, hear, smell, taste and touch. These can be things that are currently around them or things that they recall from experience.  What is their favorite food and what does it taste like (sweet or sour)?  What texture do they like to feel soft things or rough things?  What temperature...hot things or cold things? Smell stinky things or sweet things? Hear loud noises or soft sounds?  What do they like to listen to loudly? What not? Can they name things in all of these categories? Can they name things they like or least like? How about what members of their family likes?

What do people who don't have one or more of their senses do?  How do they move around in a room or outside?

Activities:

- Have the kids partner up, close their eyes (or blindfold them) and have their partner lead them around the room by verbally guiding them. How does a guide dog help a blind person?

- Have them close (or blindfold them)  their eyes and try to fill up a cup of water using their sense of touch. They will stick their finger inside the cup, and stop pouring when they feel the liquid.

- Split the class up into 2 groups, have them sit on a cleared floor facing each other, give each side identical animals that they have to sound like (the moo of a cow, the neigh of a horse, the baa of a sheep).  Blindfold them and have them crawl toward each other until they can find the same animal, using only the sound of that animal coming from the other side of the room.

- Hold blindfold taste tests to see if they can identify a flavor, a scent or a texture rubbing against them, or touching their hands. Can they identify things with the touch of their bare feet? Can they pick up things with their toes?

- Have the kids hold their nose and see if they can identify a flavor. They won't be able to, of course.

- Have the kids sit down in the center of the room.  Shut off the lights and pull the blinds. What do they feel? What do they hear?
