Key #1 - Essentials of Public Speaking
Whether you’re a trainer, a sales person, or a CEO, you want to deliver a knock-out presentation that will have lasting effects. You may or may not make it your life’s work, but what separates the lackluster speaker from the spectacular one is the magic of being both memorable and sought-after. I’ll continue to post key essentials in this series on public speaking to help you stand out in a very competitive arena.
1. Teach the audience something they don’t already know. Ask yourself why your audience is sitting in front of you. What do they want to learn? Do you have information that will make their day easier? Or, is what you’re saying just a recap of what they already know. Do your homework. Understand your audience’s typical day and the challenges within it. Take the time to research information that is relevant to your attendees and present content in a new and creative way, giving them “ah ha” moments to remember through experiences rather than bullet points. If you share research, find a way to show your attendees how the research has validity by giving solid examples to which they can relate.
Attend webinars and training on the same subject. Take note of the questions that are asked and observe the audience’s response to the information. What is being done right and what could be done better?
On a side note about quotes and research, I recommend that you place bibliographical information on the bottom of your slides in a soft colored, size seven font. Doing so makes it easy to look up any new research in the same area, and if ever challenged, defend your position. Some of my slides go back ten years. There is no way I'm going to remember back that far.
