Tip #3 – Proofs & Previews: Things I Learned Self-Publishing on KDP
In case you missed my previous posts, I am sharing what I’ve learned as I move forward in the self-publishing process using Amazon.com's KDP. I don’t claim to have all of the answers, so chime in if you would like to add your expertise.
# 3 – When uploading your book files on KDP, the cover and back of the book are uploaded separate from the interior pages. When you upload the complete PDF of your interior pages, you are given the option to immediately preview them on the KDP site. You get this lovely page turning PDF view. However, there is no instant preview process when you upload the cover and back of your book. It isn’t until after the KDP team reviews your complete submission (about 24 hours later) that you get to preview your book in its entirely as a PDF online. You receive an email that says, “Proof is ready to order: (Your Book Title),” and a link to follow. After you log into KDP , you can check your complete book online with another page turning PDF, including cover artwork placement with regard to the gutter, margins, etc. You can still make changes. If you don’t like what you see, submit your book again for review by the KDP team (another 24 hours). When you are happy with your book, you can move ahead with your publication by clicking a button. Your book almost immediately appears in the KDP eStore.
After you have published your book and received printed copies from KDP, you can STILL make changes by repeating the above process. Just remember, the ISBN identifies your title's edition, publisher, and physical properties. So, there are some things you can’t change, like the trim size, binding, or number of pages, without re-publishing the book under a new ISBN.
Did you know you can publish your book on Amazon KDP in as fast as a week for no money down? Whether you are just starting to write a book or you’ve finished one and have no idea where to turn, this book will help you get your book launched into the market.
