Tip #7 - ISBN: Things I Learned Self-Publishing on KDP
In case you missed my previous posts, I am sharing what I’ve learned as I move forward in the self-publishing process using Amazon's KDP. I don’t claim to have all of the answers, so chime in if you would like to add your expertise.
#7 - You can obtain an ISBN for your book from KDP, or you can use your own ISBNs purchased from Bowker.com. Either way, KDP will place the barcode on the lower right side of the back of your book for publication. All you have to do is enter the ISBN number when you set-up your title in KDP and leave enough space for the barcode to be placed by KDP on the lower right corner of the back of your book.
Your book is not eligible for distribution to Libraries and Academic Institutions without a KDP provided ISBN, so if you want to use your own ISBN, you will end up having to publish two different versions of your book if you want KDP to handle distribution to Libraries and Academic Institutions: one with your ISBN, and one with KDP’s. Seems silly, but it’s true.
At Bowker.com, (1) ISBN is $125 and (10) costs $250 to $275, depending upon what special they are running. You will need (1) ISBN per format, so if you plan to publish your book in both paperback and hardback versions, you’ll need (2) different ISBNs.
ISBNs are the global standard for identifying titles
Each version of a book, print or digital, requires its own ISBN.
Most retailers require ISBNs to track book inventory
Buying an ISBN improves the chances your book will be found
Did you know you can publish your book on Amazon KDP in as fast as a week for no money down? Whether you are just starting to write a book or you’ve finished one and have no idea where to turn, this book will help you get your book launched into the market.
